The Great Race 1960 - 1966

A fabulous era in Australian motor sport commenced at Phillip Island, Victoria, with the 1960 Armstrong 500 for production cars. The endurance race moved from the Island to Mount Panorama, Bathurst in 1963. This video details the first seven years of Australia’s Greatest Motor Race and makes compulsive viewing and is, indeed, a collector’s item.

The Great Race 1967 - 1974

Australia’s classic endurance race, the Bathurst 1000, has entertained millions of people and probably none more colourful than the 1967-1974 era. It was during this period that the youngsters of the calibre of Colin Bond, Allan Moffat, Peter Brock and John Goss emerged to cave a niche for themselves in local motor sporting history.

The Great Race 1975 - 1985

By 1975, after 13 years of the race being held at Bathurst, it had firmly established itself as a annual race legend, one never to be forgotten in the history of Australian motor sport. The Ford-Holden battle raged relentlessly on the Mountain during 1975 to 1985.

The Great Race 1986 - 1992

Although it was 1981 that saw the introduction of the turbo entry into The Great Race with the Nissan Bluebird, it was not until 1988 that a turbo-charged machine came to the flag in the No 1 position. From this point on, The Great Race has been dominated by turbos, in particular the Sierra RS 500’s and in the latter years by the sophisticated fore wheel drive, twin-turbo GT-R of Nissan. 1992 has seen the last victory for a turbo, as they are no more. The generation of this complex technology has now passed and with the reintroduction of the V8 car we have seen The Great Race turn full circle. This video features highlights from all individual races in one action-packed release during the Turbolent Tears.

The Great Race 1993 - 1996

THE return of V8-powered Commodores and Falcons full-time to Australian touring car racing in 1993 was welcomed by race fans all over the country as the annual Bathurst 1000 endurance race returned somewhat to its homegrown roots. On this special edition of Seven Sport's Magic Moments of Motorsport we recap the all-important Top 10 Shootouts from Bathurst between 1993 and 1996 as the biggest stars in Aussie racing shot for the ultimate glory of pole position for Australia's 'Great Race'. The traditional Shootout at Bathurst has become a highlight of each year’s 1000-kilometre and this release features all of the greats in action at Mount Panorama, putting it all on the line to claim the prestigious pole position. On this special release you'll see Larry Perkins sweep to pole in 1993 in his Castrol Commodore, Glenn Seton take a pair of poles for Ford in 1994 and 1996 and a young Craig Lowndes break through for his first pole in 1995 for the Holden Racing Team.

The Great Race 1997 - 2001

The Boys are Back at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama, and proved that nothing shakes the Mountain like V8 Supercars. This new release highlights the Holden vs Ford classic battles from 1997-2001 – they raced for four years in November and the fifth back to the traditional October. Highlights are: 1997 – Perkins won his sixth Bathurst in a Commodore, his partner, Ingall, won for the first time. Also, Peter Brock’s last race. 1998 – The Bright/Richards Falcon claimed The Great Race prize in a true thriller, a victory against the odds. 1999 – The Richards/Murphy VT Commodore outlasted the field in back-to-back wins for Richards Dick Johnson’s last appearance. 2000 – The Bargwanna/Tander Commodore conquered the Mountain in the most evenly contested 1000 for years. 2001 – Skaife and Longhurst achieved Holden’s 21st victory at The Great Race in one of the fastest 1000 events to date.

The Great Race 2002 - 2008

This exciting release “The Great Race Supercars 2002 – 2008” features 30-minute highlights packages from each of these seven Bathurst 1000 races. It was a classic era of V8 Supercars racing that saw the gradual emergence of then-Ford team Triple Eight Race Engineering at a time when the factory Walkinshaw/Holden Racing Team squad was the benchmark team – classic Holden-vs-Ford action on the Mountain in the noughties!
